Protect Against ATM Skimming Devices
As more and more reports of ATM skimming are popping up across the country, you may be wondering what you can do to help protect yourself. Below is a list of tips to help you detect and avoid skimming devices and keep your account information safe from criminals.
What to Look For
Before inserting your card into the machine’s reader, tug on the outside of the reader to see if it moves. Also inspect for ill-fitting reader that may cover up messaging on ATM or for any signs of adhesive residue. If you notice any of these, do not use the ATM and be sure to alert branch staff.
Be aware of keypads with buttons that seem difficult to press, or for evidence that a new keypad has been placed over the existing one. If you notice any of these, do not use the ATM and be sure to alert branch staff.
Criminals often use a concealed camera along with skimming devices to record PINs being entered into ATM. Cameras are often hidden on the front of the ATM in a fake part by the screen or attached to a nearby item like a light fixture, the ATM hood or even a nearby brochure holder. If you notice any of these, do not use the ATM and be sure to alert branch staff.

Other Helpful Tips
Whenever you enter your PIN at an ATM, use one hand to type in the numbers and the other to cover the hand pressing the keys. This could help prevent a camera or nearby onlooker from picking up your PIN.
Criminals can also install skimmers on door card readers. If you need to gain entry to somewhere through a vestibule door, do not use your debit card. From your wallet, choose a card with a magnetic strip that doesn’t connect to any financial information.
